2026 National Speech & Debate Tournament

June 14-19, 2026

This June, Richmond will host the National Speech & Debate Tournament, one of the largest academic competitions in the world. Thousands of students from every state will gather in our region to debate ideas, tell stories, and practice the essential skills of democracy—critical thinking, respectful disagreement, and confident communication. The event brings significant economic and community impact while showcasing Richmond as a city that values education, civic life, and the next generation of leaders.

For one week, our city will be at the center of a national celebration of ideas and opportunity. More than 7,000 students—joined by coaches, families, and educators—will experience Richmond’s history, neighborhoods, and hospitality, bringing energy and investment to local businesses and institutions. Hosting this tournament signals who we are: a community that believes young voices deserve a stage and that the future of civic life is worth welcoming home.

The tournament arrives during America’s semiquincentennial, connecting the nation’s founding ideals of free expression and self-government with the young people who will carry those ideals forward. In a city where historic debates helped shape the country, students will practice the same essential work—testing ideas, speaking with conviction, and learning how democracy actually functions. It turns an anniversary about the past into a living moment about the future.

  • 7,000 student competitors
  • 3,000 coaches, families, judges, and staff
  • 1,500 schools represented
  • 42 national champions
  • $22 million estimated economic impact
  • Events in 750+ classrooms across 8 local schools
  • First time hosted in Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic

“Our city has long been an example of inspiring change through public discourse and debate. We are thrilled to introduce thousands of the nation’s brightest young leaders to the rich history and culture of Richmond this June. We know Richmond will continue to inspire our visitors to ignite change through the power of their voices.”

– MAyor Danny Avula, City of Richmond

The National Speech & Debate Tournament is the culminating championship of the National Speech & Debate Association. For five days, competitors participate in dozens of event styles—from Original Oratory and Extemporaneous Speaking to Interpretation, Policy Debate, Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, and Congressional Debate.

Students advance through multiple preliminary rounds scored by trained judges using national rubrics for reasoning, evidence, organization, and delivery. Top competitors move through elimination brackets to final rounds on a national stage. The week also includes judge training, coach caucuses, student assemblies, and service events in a highly coordinated, multi-venue schedule across Greater Richmond.

Competitive speech and debate is a national academic activity in which students prepare and perform original speaking, interpretation, and debate events before evaluators. Across formats, students demonstrate research, organization, critical thinking, and public communication skills, engaging thoughtfully with topics and audiences in real time.

Speech and debate programs teach young people how to think, not what to think—building citizens who can question evidence, listen to opposing views, and speak with clarity and courage. Those skills shape stronger communities that know how to disagree without losing respect for one another.

Richmond was chosen to host because our community made a deliberate decision to invest in the future of civic conversation. Beginning in 2020, Richmond Region Tourism and The Richmond Forum partnered to position the city as a natural home for this national event, highlighting our long history as a place where American ideas have been tested and debated.

At the same time, the Richmond Forum Speech & Debate Initiative (RFSDI) was expanding access to programs across Central Virginia schools—building a vibrant local ecosystem of teams, coaches, volunteers, and tournaments. That growth caught the attention of the National Speech & Debate Association, which saw in Richmond not only strong venues and hospitality, but a region deeply committed to the values the activity represents.

Today, Richmond is emerging as a national leader in civil discourse—a city that believes young people should learn to disagree with respect, speak with evidence, and participate confidently in public life. Hosting the tournament is the culmination of years of collaboration among educators, civic organizations, and tourism leaders who share a vision for Richmond as a destination for ideas.

“The Richmond Forum’s mission is to present powerful voices so Richmond can learn and to empower local voices so Richmond can lead. An investment in speech and debate programs is part of our long game to build a better Richmond by fostering more civil discourse.”

– Heather Crislip, Executive Director of The Richmond Forum
